Daydream Disbeliever, or … Do I Cry or Throw Tomatoes?

[When the idea of The Monkees as a TV show first emerged, it was regarded as the lamest ever. A rock and roll band created as a sitcom, with guys who could barely play their instruments. C’mon, Man! And it was lame, but we kinda got attached to the guys, whose tongues nearly poked out of their cheeks:

And some of the songs … well, you know, they really weren’t too bad. Last Train to Claksville, Stepping Stone … This one was particularly catchy:

I came across this following video in one of my doddering, recent moments. I was confused about how to react. It was sad to think that Mickey is the only one left alive. Sadder, too, to think that Warren Zevon, who was auditioned unsuccessfully to be a Monkee, is gone, too.

But another side of me said “Get the hook! Hand me the tomatoes!”

This schlock, schmaltz, some of those other “sh-h-h” words. Look at that band member holding up the alarm clock. In the words of Dire Straits “It ain’t what they call rock ‘n roll.”

Still, it’s sweet, however sentimental. Even a crusty old Silverback has a bit of room for that. SB SM]

  1. That was so fun and reminiscent. I loved that TV show as a kid and their songs were very “catchy”. Thanks for starting my morning with a big smile – I’ll be singing Sleepy Jean in my head all day.

  2. Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean to a
    Daydream believer?

    Be true to your school
Just like you would to your girl
    Let your colors fly

    Some people think we
    Might be hardwired for haiku
    I bet it’s the beat

    1. Wow, the rock ‘n roll haiku strikes again. Do you have any more in the well? Maybe
      Werewolves of London?

      Brilliant, especially the first!

  3. A couple of wry-ish observations:

Michael Nesmith actually was a capable songwriter. Example: Different Drum, brought to life by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys.

My uncle was vice-principal of the high school in Dallas where Nesmith was a student. And dealt with some “disciplinary issues.” 🤣

I’ll always see Mickey as Circus Boy.

  4. I loved the show and their music when I was a kid. Contrary to popular belief, they were all musicians. Three, able to play multiple instruments but they weren’t allowed to. Davy Jones was a drummer for example but all were chosen by the execs because of their looks, acting, and musical ability. There are a few documentaries out their and a quick Wikipedia search reveals a lot about their unique situation. Check out the super weird, art-cult film written by Jack Nicholson, starring the Monkees, called Head.
