Written by Carole King (Tapestry) and Gerry Goffin, produced by Phil Spector, and recorded by The Crystals of Da-Doo-Run-Run fame … a package like this has smash hit written all over it, right? Instead it goes into the annals as one of the worst song ideas ever, and one that seems even more inappropriate by the passing minute.
Here’s a more recent cover, that I also don’t know how to explain.
Runner-up in the “this song hasn’t aged well” category is I Will Follow Him by “Little” Peggy March. At least this song reflects the prevalent attitudes of the time (but what were Carole King and Gerry Goffin– her husband at the time– thinking?
