Special Edition … Today is Truck Day

Red Sox Truck Day
Fans write messages on the truck before it leaves Fenway Park to deliver equipment and supplies to the Red Sox spring training site in Ft. Myers, Florida

Today is a religious holiday for Red Sox fans, as the equipment truck will be loaded and leaving Fenway to head south. Thus begins the 2021 baseball season. Here’s what it will be loaded with:

~ 20,400 baseballs

~ 1,100 bats

~ 200 batting gloves

~ 200 batting helmets

~ 320 Batting Practice tops

~ 160 white game jerseys

~ 300 pairs of pants

~ 400 T-shirts

~ 400 pairs of socks

~ 20 cases of bubble gum

~ 60 cases of sunflower seeds

Take me out to the ball game!

In 2012 the Red Sox finished dead last in their division. Nevertheless, fans showed up at Fenway in legions to wave the truck off. It proved to be the beginning of a momentous summer in the city of Boston, a season I chronicled in my weblog Truck Day to Duck Day. Here’s how it began:

February 5, 2013 … It’s Truck Day in Boston!

This is the first day of summer. It may seem like just another gray, cold Tuesday in February, but it’s Truck Day. The doors to the big rig are opened at 7 am and the loading begins. Bats, ball, medical supplies, training equipment, and assorted gear is brought from the clubhouse at Fenway to begin the 1500 mile drive to Fort Myers. It all needs to be in place before the official reporting day on Sunday.
This Year's Theme

Larry Lucchino, Red Sox president, showed up. So did Will Middlebrooks, last year’s rookie third baseman who was one of the team’s few bright spots before going down with a broken wrist. Lucchino unveiled the season’s theme of “Big Thing’s Ahead.” Around noon the trucks began rolling south, towards Fort Myers and Boston’s amazing summer of 2013.

And here’s a link to the summary for the entire month of February:

With the Super Bowl now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to be thinking spring!

  1. Hey..just an FYI…every year, on its way through Florida, the truck stops in The Villages. The Red Sox Fan Club here is the largest of all clubs with well over 1,000 members. They all turn out to pay homage to the driver and the truck. It’s quite a scene,

    1. What?! Over 1000 members of the Red Sox Fan Club? Yet another reason that The Villages is paradise.
